“The extra umph in ovations for the Albany Symphony must be credited to the guest conductor, Lidiya Yankovskaya. She is a busy and respected figure on podiums, handling both concerts and operas with equal aplomb. Her performances of two classics and one contemporary were splendid. This was the best outing from a visiting conductor in recent memory. Yankovskaya displays a light touch. She balances her baton so gently in her right hand that it seems to take on its own life. Yet several times she gave commanding cues with her whole upper body. Nothing was exaggerated but it conveyed a message: be here now in the music.”
